Cotswold District Council will be celebrating this year’s Armed Forces Day in the north and south of the district on Monday 25 June.
There will be a special flag raising ceremony at the Council’s Trinity Road, Cirencester headquarters at 10 am which will be followed by a similar event at the Moreton Area Centre at 12 noon. At both venues the public will be given the opportunity to show their support for the work of the Army, Navy and RAF. Council Chairman Cllr Julian Beale will make a short speech and then raise the flag at both venues. Each ceremony will be attended by local representatives of the armed forces, local schools, and senior officials from the Council.
Since its introduction in 2009, Armed Forces Day has become a national institution. This is the fifth year running that the Council has staged a ceremony at Moreton as well as Cirencester. Both ceremonies were well attended last year as people gathered to pay their respects to past and present service personnel who have helped to make this country safe and prosperous.
Armed Forces Day was first launched in June 2009 to show support for the work of serving troops and cadets, as well as service families and veterans. This year, the free national celebration will take place in Gillingham on Saturday 30 June where there will be 20 acres of displays and ‘have-a-go’ activities for all ages. Highlights will include: Royal Engineer trades village; army medical services; infantry displays, Royal Military Police; kiddies obstacle course; Naval Forces display area; helicopters fly-in; military parade; bandstand concerts; military wives choir; military heritage displays; and a giant funfair.
