Update: 23 May 2019 Update on ATM theft in Bourton

Alert message sent 23/05/2019 09:46:00

Information sent on behalf of Gloucestershire Constabulary

Yesterday morning my colleague, PC Nick Westmacott, alerted you to an incident in Bourton-on-the-Water at about 2:15am where thieves attempted to steal a cash machine (ATM) from the Londis store in the High Street.

Detectives investigating the attempted theft of the ATM in Bourton-on-the-Water in the early hours of Wednesday morning arrested a man a few hours later.

The 40-year-old-man was arrested at an address in Cheltenham and has been questioned at Compass House Police Station.

Police were called to Bourton-on-the-Water at about 2.15am after a member of the public reported seeing a white Transit van attached to the ATM at the Londis store, in High Street, as thieves attempted to pull it from the wall.

The van pulled away dragging the ATM with it but, as our first officer arrived at the scene, the occupants got out and left in a silver car, possibly a BMW.

The ATM was left in the middle of the road with the cash contents intact.

Scenes of crime officers were working at the scene Wednesday morning and the abandoned vehicle and the ATM have now been recovered.

Officers are following a number of lines of enquiry and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in Bourton-on-the-Water or saw any of the vehicles arriving or leaving.

Det Sgt Jon Newton said: “We are grateful to the members of the public who alerted us to the incident which enabled us to be on the scene quickly.

“Thankfully nothing was stolen, but we are aware of the damage caused and the impact this will have on the local community and visitors to this popular village.

“We would like to hear from anyone who has information which would help our investigation and enable us to bring the offenders to justice.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Gloucestershire Constabulary on 101 quoting incident 22 of 22 May.

Gloucestershire police incident 22 22/05/19.

Police have attended the attempted theft of an ATM machine at Londis Stores Bourton-on-the-Water at 2:15am this morning. The offenders have rammed the shop and dragged out the ATM. The ATM has then been dragged down the High Street into Lansdown where it has been abandoned.

The offenders have then left the scene in a white panel van, which was abandoned and has now been seized by police for forensics. It is believed the offenders transferred to a silver saloon car, possibly a BMW.

Police are asking for any witnesses, not already spoken to, to call 101 quoting the incident number above.

Many thanks, PC 2201 Nick Westmacott, Stow Neighbourhood Policing Team
