At its meeting next week, Gloucestershire County Council’s cabinet will be asked to approve the next steps in developing the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Alongside this the county council is keen to hear from residents on how the county’s bus services can be improved. A very short survey has been developed which can be found on the county council website. The survey closes on 24 September. This is the first stage of consultation and further consultation on more specific proposals will be run later in the year.

Earlier this year the government published its National Bus Strategy ‘Bus Back Better’. This sets out the vision and opportunity to deliver better bus services for passengers across England, through ambitious and far-reaching reform of how services are planned and delivered.

Within this strategy, Gloucestershire County Council, as the Local Transport Authority, is putting together a Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP). This sets out the council’s strategic vision for bus services in the county.

The BSIP covers bus times and frequency; bus priority; zero emission buses; fares and tickets; passenger experience; and information and branding.

Once the BSIP is in place, the county council will develop an Enhanced Partnership with the county’s bus operators.

The Enhanced Partnership is a legal agreement committing the council and bus operators to delivering improvements to make services more attractive to use. These include infrastructure and passenger experience elements such as bus shelters, bus priority measures, Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI), timetables and fares.

Councillor Philip Robinson, cabinet member responsible for public transport said, “There are many challenges in developing a bus service network fit for the future, not least of which is helping to ensure passenger numbers continue to recover from the effects of the pandemic.

“So they can thrive, bus services need to be accessible and have wide appeal to potential customers. We are particularly focused on encouraging workers to commute by bus and supporting younger people, who often have limited transport options, to access education, training opportunities and employment.”
